Yi Peng & Loi Krathong in Chiang Mai — guided evening
The trip, in short
Yi Peng falls on the full moon of the second Lanna month — usually November — and coincides with Loi Krathong. The images everyone knows come from ticketed mass releases outside the city, which are spectacular and expensive.
The city itself is arguably better: lanterns going up in ones and twos from temple courtyards all evening, the moat and the Ping river filling with candlelit krathong, and Tha Phae Gate lit end to end.
Your guide walks you through the temple ceremonies, gets you a krathong to float, and keeps you out of the worst of the crush.
