Chiang Rai: White Temple, Blue Temple & the Golden Triangle
The trip, in short
Chalermchai Kositpipat has been building Wat Rong Khun since 1997 and expects it to take another six decades. It is white plaster set with mirror glass, approached across a bridge over a field of reaching hands, and the murals inside include a burning skyscraper and, at various points, characters from films.
Wat Rong Suea Ten is the counterpoint, twenty minutes away — the same visual ambition in ultramarine and gold.
The Golden Triangle at Sop Ruak is where the Ruak meets the Mekong and three countries touch. There is a decent opium museum and a slightly kitsch viewpoint; the river itself is the thing.
