Sam Roi Yot & the Phraya Nakhon cave pavilion

The trip, in short

Phraya Nakhon is the strangest place in this part of Thailand: a cave with a hole in the roof, and beneath the hole a four-gabled teak-and-gold pavilion built for Rama V in 1890.

Between roughly 10:00 and 10:30 in the dry season, a shaft of sunlight comes through the collapse and lands square on the pavilion. Getting there for it means a boat along the coast and then a steep 430-metre climb over a headland.

The rest of Sam Roi Yot — the "three hundred peaks" — is limestone, mangrove and marsh, and one of the better birdwatching sites in the country.

Meeting point

Your hotel lobby in Hua Hin or Cha-am.

Pick-up area: Hua Hin and Cha-am hotels. We message your exact pick-up window the evening before, with the driver's name and vehicle.

Before you book

  • The climb over the headland is steep, rocky and about thirty minutes each way. Proper shoes, and not advisable with knee trouble.
  • The light beam is a dry-season phenomenon and depends on cloud. We cannot guarantee it.
  • The coastal boat does not run in heavy swell; the alternative is the longer land route.
